Culture: The United Kingdom of Culture (by Carla)

Hello!

Given that today is Friday, I wanted to share a different activity with you all. During this quarantine period, Google Arts & Culture has really stepped up its game. This site allows you to explore museums, heritage sites, paintings, architecture, and many more cultural and artistic elements from the comforts of your own home. If you are a "culture vulture" (an English idiom that means you really enjoy culture and the arts), you will love this website!

What I propose to you today is a virtual tour of some of the best cultural features of my country, the UK! As the website states: "from art and fashion to machines and magic, explore the history and culture of the UK with over 140 institutions"....

ARCHITECTURE

There are hundreds of beautiful buildings in the UK. Google Maps allows you to embark on a virtual tour of many of these. I have selected a few of them for you:

Edinburgh Castle (Edinburgh, Scotland)

MUSEUMS

I encourage you to explore each of these sites. Each museum has hundreds of more links showcasing their collections, their paintings, their historial artefacts... and many more objects. Have a wonder and discover new things!

The Tate is an art museum with a modern taste. It is famous for its many abstract paintings and sculptures, but some pieces date back to Tudor times. Architecturally, it is also very interesting. There is a wonderful view of London's skyline from the Tate.

The National Gallery is a more traditional museum that hosts a range of different portraits and paintings.

The British Museum is perhaps the most famous museum in the UK. It is a History museum and you can find invaluable historical artefacts such as the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, and Egyptian mummies. I have been there dozens of times and I can tell you I still haven't seen the entire museum!

Similar to the National Gallery in London, the Scottish museum also has a wide range of artistic objects from all over the world and special collections with a particular focus on Scottish artists.

This museum focuses on the military history of the UK. If you enjoy learning about the World Wars, weapons, vehicles and military tactics, you will thoroughly enjoy this museum.

NATURE

The Giant's Causeway may look like it's man-made, but it is an amazing rock formation on the northern coast of Northern Ireland.

If you are a fan of the Brontë sisters, especially Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' novel, you will enjoy exploring the Yorkshire Moors. In the summer, these moors turn violet because of all the heather.

A beautiful and natural archway on the beaches of Dorset, in the South of England.

ARTS

You can find many more links about Arts in the UK here: British Arts

FASHION

You can find many more links about Fashion in the UK here: British Fashion

HISTORY

You can find many more links about History in the UK here:British History

LITERATURE

ACTIVITY

I encourage you to find one particular place, object, painting, building or historical period that caught your attention. Read about it, find out more, google more images and learn something new! Then, once you have enough information, you can write a short review about it. Tell us what it is, remember to give some context (place, time period, relevance...etc.), write a couple of interesting facts about it, and tell us why you like it! It doesn't have to be one of the cultural features I have mentioned here - feel free to find your own!

I hope you find something new and interesting about British culture. Of course, feel free to post any questions that I may help you with!

Enjoy! :)

Best wishes,

Carla

I have chosen the Giant’s Causeway from the section of nature of the document. The Giant’s Causeway is a rock formation in Northern Ireland. It’s a very interesting place that is not in other part of the world.

They’re like small columns of rocks that are in the ground with a hexagonal figure. It’s supposed that two giants, one Scottish and other Irish had a fight and they started to throw stones. Actually it was formed from a volcanic eruption.

A lot of people visit this place. It is very famous and you can find many pictures of it if you search in Google. Besides, for example, you can see this place in the TV series Game of Thrones because…
