Hello everyone!
This post is aimed at students with an upper intermediate level of English (B1-B2 Level). I hope you are well.
Another interesting topic I thought we could discuss is Politics. Everyone is involved in Politics and has a political opinion, even if you think you don't like Politics and consider yourself to be apolitical, that in itself is a political statement. The beauty of Politics is that everybody has a right to have different beliefs and priorities. I studied Politics at University so I am passionate about it and I think it's very important that you begin to familiarise yourselves with different political issues, especially as you'll be able to vote in just a couple of years :)
I am sure you have disagreed with your parents, your siblings or your friends about an important issue at least once in your life (think of controversial topics like Bullfighting, Reproductive Rights, Religion... etc.). Therefore, I am sure you'll find this Ted Talk interesting: 'Do politics make us irrational?'
By the way: 'politics' can be a singular noun or a plural noun. It's an uncountable noun, so we can say 'Politics IS' or 'Politics ARE' - depends on what you want to express :)
Unlike in Spanish where 'política' can mean various things, we have different terms: Politics (the field), politicians (the people who work in Politics), policies (the measures or legislation taken by the politicians).
Once you have watched this video, you can find some reading comprehension questions here, under the 'Think' tab : https://ed.ted.com/lessons/do-politics-make-us-irrational-jay-van-bavel#review
If you would like to engage further, you can read more about the psychology of Politics in additional resources here, under the 'Dig Deeper' tab: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/do-politics-make-us-irrational-jay-van-bavel#digdeeper
I hope you enjoyed this post!
Best wishes,
